Scenario 5 - Data visualization

Problem statement#

As data scientist, I want to use a visualization tool to be hosted in an Amazon WorkSpaces. Furthermore, the users have also requested a range of database solutions and object storage solutions for hosting their relational and non-relational datasets. It needs to be deployed on AWS, and will consist in Amazon S3 Data Lake, relational database servers, and Amazon DocumentDB.

Goals#

Centralize and share Power BI dashboards with all stakeholders.

Tools & Capabilities#

To meet the use case goals, the following tools from the portal will be leveraged:

Tool Description Key capability
PowerBI Microsoft Power BI is a visualization tool that provides the capability to connect data from different structured, or non-structured, data sources and create a diverse range of visualizations in an interactive way. Data visualization
Amazon Workspaces Amazon WorkSpaces can be used to provision either Windows or Linux desktops. A WorkSpaces enables users to access their private subnet via a desktop client. Virtual Machine

Use case guide#

This document is meant to guide the user through Scenario 5 - Data visualization. As presented in the use case description, the goal is to provide relevant visualizations through PowerBI and share it with a wide range of stakeholders using different cloud platforms, database solutions, and object storage solutions.

The resources of AWS are located in a private subnet. This isolates the resources from the public internet, creating a secure environment for the users to work.

Also, thanks to established VPN connections with the AWS network of the EC Data Platform, the AWS services can seamlessly communicate with each other.

The guide will be a step-by-step tutorial towards such objective. More in detail, each subsection covers a step of the approach, namely:

  1. Connect to Amazon Workspaces. From their local machine, connect to the Amazon Workspaces using the Amazon WorkSpaces client. More information can be found in the user documentation of Amazon WorkSpaces.
  2. Launch PowerBI. When inside the desktop environment of Amazon WorkSpaces, the users can launch the application of Power BI. More information can be found in the user documentation of Power BI.
  3. Import the data. The users can import data to Power BI from any of the deployed Database or Object Storage solutions. More information can be found in the user documentation of Power BI.
