Azure Power BI Gateway#

  • User needs: Governance and Connectivity

  • User profiles: Business Users, Data Analysts

  • User assumed knowledge: None

Azure Power BI Gateway (Standard mode) is a service that keep your Power BI dashboards and reports up to date by connecting to your isolated Cloud data sources without the need to move the data.

DSL admin users of EC DataPlatform have access to a shared Power BI Gateway. These users can allow other DSL users to access this shared Power BI Gateway to establish connections between the Power BI Gateway and their deployed resources in EC Data Platform. These connections allow DSL users to access their datasets outside the private subnet of EC Data Platform.

For example, DSL users can establish connections between the Power BI Gateway and their deployed SQL database servers. Once these connections are in place, the users are able to connect to their datasets hosted in the SQL database servers outside the private subnet of EC Data Platform, i.e., continue analyzing their Power BI datasets on their local computer.

We provide user instructions on how DSL admins can provide other DSL users access to the EC Data Platform Power BI Gateway. Also, we provide user instructions on how to establish Power BI Gateway connection to:

  • SQL Database server.

Finally, we provide user instructions on how to set-up a scheduled refresh of a dataset, so that the dataset can be refreshed via the Power BI Gateway connection.

Provide DSL users access to the Power BI Gateway#

To provide DSL users access to the Power BI Gateway as DSL admins,

Step 1. Go to the webapp of Power BI using a local internet browser: https://app.powerbi.com/. Log in using your EC Data Platform account and provide your password.

Step 2. On the top-right of the page click on "Settings" and click on "Manage gateways".
